You will download your backup in an .xml file format, which can be stored in your local desktop or online. You should backup regularly depending on how often you update your blog. It could be a weekly or monthly backup.
It is also advisable to backup your blog template incase you want to revert to it in future. You should always take a backup of your customized blogSpot template at regulaly so that if your blog get deleted, you will still have your theme.

It is also recommended that you keep the backup files either on Google drive or on Dropbox, so you can access them from anywhere.
