Blogging guide

What is a Blog?
Generally, a blog is a website or web page. Typically one managed by an individual or a small group, and it is written in an informal or conversational style. Sometimes blogs draw stories from sites that interest them and add link backs to such stories.

All blogs are websites but not all websites are blogs. Facebook, twitter and the rest aren't blogs but social media platforms.

Categories of Blogs
Basically, there are 2 categories of blogs namely;
The hosted blog
The self hosted blog

Hosted Blog
A hosted blog is one where your blog is built directly on the blog provider's own web servers. With an Hosted
blog, the blog provider takes full responsibilities of managing the software, data, and web-hosting. Thus, all you do is create your blog with them. Most new bloggers start off with the hosted blogging platforms. Some hosted blog providers are; blogger, tumblr, WordPress.com, joomla.com, squarespace, write.as, etc.

There are 2 types of Hosted Blog
The free hosted blog
The paid hosted blog

Free Hosted Blog
The free hosted blog are blogs you build and run without paying a dime for hosting and/or services and there is also no hidden charges. Popular blogging platforms like blogger.com, WordPress.com (you can upgrade a blog you run on wordpress.com to a paid hosted blog) and tumblr.com are platforms for creating free blogs. Here you have the opportunity to post for free.

This free hosted blogging platforms offer users no cost sub-domains for their blogs so they do not have to worry over buying a custom domain but getting a custom domain is strongly advised. Most bloggers blogging on free blogs do so for fun. Blogger and tumblr gives blog owners the ability to add a custom domain to their blogs. You can create up to 100 blogs on a free hosted blog provider.

√ What's good about free hosted blogs?
The fact that they are free.
You do not have to worry about recurring payments.
You are offered a free sub-domain; yoursite.blogspot.com, yoursite.tumblr.com, yoursite.wordpress.com

√ What's bad about free hosted blogs?
The fact that you don't own them and can get disabled at anytime, truth is, you have to step on their toes first and break some rigid rules... But if you aren't breaking any rules, then there is nothing to be afraid of.

The Paid Blog
Paid hosted blogs are generally blogging platforms that you pay to use on monthly or yearly basis, depending on what you choose. Blogging platforms like typepad.com and ghost.com are platform for paid blogs. Here you have to pay a token or more to keep your blog alive... WordPress.com becomes part of this group when you upgrade.

The paid blog providers also have their downsides but since you are paying a fee to use them, their rules wouldn't be as rigid as the free blog providers.

A Self hosted blog is one hosted in any of the web hosting companies (either for free or for a fee) with an application software which aids in creating a useful blog.  It's advised that users opt in for a reliable paid web host hosts for blog hosting.

Most professional bloggers will advise you to go for a self hosted blog because it's more convenient and safe. Besides, you are your own boss and the only thing you get worried about is having issues with your hosting provider which rarely happens so long you follow the rules.
Applications like WordPress.org, joomla are softwares for a self hosted blog.
